Well? Why IS that? Could it be because Gumtree can’t be arsed to take them down?
Try and post an ad on Craigslist – you’ll get hit with a ‘human test’ so a scamming script just won’t work.
Are Gumtree not interested? Incompetent?

Yeha one thing you can’t accuse Gumtree of is being pro-active.
I have personally reported literally hundreds (I’m not exaggerating) of dodgy listings – to be fair they do remove most of them pretty quickly but every now and then they just seem to turn a blind eye to the odd scam (no idea why).
It all started for me when I was nearly scammed over a roland electronic drum kit – expensive gear but the price was crazy cheap. Luckily I came to my senses in time, but since then I’ve made it my mission to keep the scams out of the musical instrument section (you have to pick your battles). Seriously I should be on the Gumtree payroll !
All in all I suspect that Gumtree is probably under staffed and under funded as they have shown little interest in prevention or self policing – ebay was the same a few years back but eventually had to start behaving more responsibly or face constant legal action. I believe ebay actually own Gumtree anyway so perhaps Gumtree’s attitude is not that unpredictable.
Just a last note – I have both bought and sold a number of items on Gumtree with no problems at all, so it’s not all scams
Just be careful …
Always google the email address to see if it’s associated with a scammer
Always get a landline number
Collect in person wherever possible
And the GOLDEN RULE … if it seems too cheap to be true it probably is !
